In addition to the 26 awards presented on Saturday 7 February during the Ensor Awards Gala, a few more Ensors are handed out during the Ostend Film Festival. Throughout the week, you can discover here who takes home the prizes for Best French-speaking Belgian Film, Best co-production, Best Short Film and Young Talent of the Year.
The first Ensor of the week went to the Dardenne brothers. They received the Ensor for Best French-language Belgian Film for 'Jeunes Mères', a film about five young mothers living together in a shelter.
'Jeunes Mères' premiered in Cannes, where it immediately won the award for Best Screenplay. It was also Belgium’s official submission for the Academy Awards in the category of Best International Feature Film. And now, they can add an Ensor to that impressive list as well.
Producer Dries Phlypo of A Private View was awarded the Ensor for Best Co-production for 'Köln 75'!
The film tells the true story of Vera Brandes, a passionate teenager who organised jazz pianist Keith Jarrett's legendary concert in Cologne in 1975. The concert that almost didn't happen, but ultimately resulted in the most successful piano album of all time: The Cologne Concert.
Director Ido Fluk's film was released on the 50th anniversary of the concert and had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.
Today director Jasper De Maeseneer, producer Victor Longin and D.O.P. /co-screenwriter Arthur Moelants received the Ensor Award for Best Short Film for 'Shutterspeed'.
With 'Shutterspeed', they created a powerful film about power, control and fragility. Lou Goossens shines in the lead role as Cas, a vulnerable teenager who becomes entangled in a manipulative relationship with a photographer.
The film has already had an impressive run in recent months: the Audience Award at Film Fest Gent and the Breedbeeld Short Film Festival, and four awards at the Leuven Short Film Festival, including the Humo Award and the award for Best Debut. Now they just need to make room on the shelf for their new Ensor!
